Revival A Novel Audible Audio Edition Stephen King David Morse Simon Schuster Audio Books Reviews

  • I purchased this novel for my mostly based on one reviewer's remarks about it being more like King's early work - of which I am a huge fan, though I like a lot of his more recent work, too (I do not subscribe to the theory that an author should not change with the times, age, experience, etc., even if his early stuff was solid gold). I can honestly say that I was not disappointed by the story itself - perfectly creepy and a bit wild, like King himself if I had to guess, although I will say I did not like the ending, though that's not King's fault. I do not require pat, happy endings to a book, but the end of this one not only completely scared the crap out of me (I won't elucidate too much, b/c I do not want to give it away), but suffice to say that the vision of afterlife put forth here is enough to make one wish they had never been born in the first place. Hell looks pretty good by comparison. That's both a compliment and a criticism for the author. Fair warning the story is tragic, the characters are sad, almost hopeless (the "almost" is what saves them) and the atmosphere is positively bleak throughout. Didn't stop me binge-reading it from beginning to end. I suppose that says it all.
  • Revival is the life-spanning story of Jamie Morton and his “fifth business,” Pastor Charles Jacobs (who goes by a number of names throughout the book). The story opens with Jamie as a six year old boy, and closes with him in his late fifties. Pastor Jacobs is a friendly, vibrant young man with a passionate interest in all things electricity who is newly-hired as a preacher in Jamie's small town. While their first interactions are pleasant—even profound—Jamie and Charles run into each other a number of other times (and under vastly different circumstances) throughout the book.

I had some trouble getting interested in this book until roughly 100 pages in when Jamie's music career begins. The childhood portion of his story is in many ways sweet, but feels a bit rushed on the character development. In fact, I would say that this book had a rushed feel about it overall, at least rushed by King's usual standards, as he is so known for lengthy (and excellent) character development in earlier works. Scenes and people breeze past in Revival before the reader gets much of a chance to get a solid feel for them, and something about it feels underdeveloped.

(Mild plot spoilers from this point on) The strongest section of the book by far is the middle third when Jamie Morton becomes interested in playing guitar, picking up his brother's dusty ax on a whim and finding he is more or less a natural. Once he begins playing with various bands in high school and beyond, there are some great passages lusciously describing the experience of performing live music and all that goes with it shaky nerves, the thrill of applause, impressing cute girls in the crowd, etc. Jamie primarily plays in cover bands, and King goes to the trouble to mention quite a few specific bands and songs from the fifties and sixties (some nostalgia on his part, no doubt) that they perform, which only adds to the liveliness of these passages. To top this all off, Jamie develops a serious drug problem which makes for a more enthralling read.

The section following Jamie's music career (but before the big climax) is only mildly interesting. Jamie is growing older and acquires a job at a recording studio/ranch in Nederland, Colorado. Jacobs is now a traveling tent revival preacher with nationwide hype. He travels from city to city and apparently “heals” people with his secret and powerful electricity inventions. There are some fun moments here (like the over-the-top charismatic religious language), but the healing reverend concept feels like something we've seen before.

(SEVERE spoilers, this paragraph only) Some King readers have taken issue with the big finish to Revival, as it was perceived by many to be a rather random left-turn. The idea of a secret, terrifying “behind-the-curtain” world of damnation and slavery for all mankind at the hands (claws?) of ant-like beasts accessed by means of Jacobs' “secret electricity” seemed to some like a bit of a stretch. I admit, there are hardly any indications earlier in the book that it is leading anywhere remotely supernatural (which, granted, preserves the element of surprise), other than the indication that the electrical force Jacobs has tapped into may have some spiritual or otherworldly origins. The ending reminded me somewhat of the ending to Under the Dome, if only for its completely unexpected turn and inexplicable, there-are-things-bigger-than-us-in-the-universe quality. There is also a definite nod to the works and universe of H.P. Lovecraft (of whom King has been a lifelong fan), specifically the mention towards the end of “The Great Ones.”

Personally, I liked the ending, zany though it was. I'm always up for a wildly crazy conclusion in the right time and place. However, this ending almost feels like a random weird conclusion just for the sake of weirdness. The book builds and builds, but it is almost as if King didn't know how to end it in a logical way, so he threw in some Crazy. That's an unfair criticism, I confess. Maybe King had this particular ending in mind the whole time, and the book is simply imbalanced. But again, that is not to say it is, on the whole, bad.

Still, anyone claiming that Revival is 'KING'S TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO TRUE HORROR, WITH THE CLASSIC QUALITY OF HIS EARLIER WORKS!' is just a yes-man or -woman who is going to put five stars on anything the man puts out.

Revival isn't great, but neither is it crap. In my view, a middling King book is still at the same level of quality as a very good book from any other writer. The man is a genius, but even the masters write a dud here and there.

P.S. I did catch a few minor links to The Dark Tower series. There are several mentions of a red race car stenciled on the side with the number 19. Also, I believe the band name Jamie plays with for the longest amount of time, "Chrome Roses," is also a passing reference to TDK universe.
  • Not one of King's best. The beginning is terrific and draws you in with King's trademark gifts of story telling and character development. The protagonist, Jamie Morgan, is flawed, but likeable. Like some of King's more recent protagonists, he is in recovery (this time, from an addiction to heroin), and seems to be seeking redemption.

The problem is not with Jamie, who King fleshes out quite well, but with Charlie/Danny Jacobs, who becomes the villain of this novel. His story line is too weak, and his character development is too flimsy to make him seem believable. Any sympathy the reader develops for him in the early part of the book quickly dissipates as the story builds toward its anticlimactic and disappointing finish, which seems rushed, as if King knew the story sucked, but had to grind it out to fulfill his publication contract.

Three-quarters through the book, I wondered how King would be able to wrap it up. He didn't. He just gave up on a story that wasn't going anywhere and threw together an unimpressive and unimaginative ending.

This book is not about revival or redemption. It is about facing death without hope of realizing or receiving either. It is about disillusion and disappointment. Which is fitting, since that's what you'll get if you're expecting classic King.

A chilling follow-up to the popular true-crime book The Anatomy of Evil.

Revisiting Dr. Michael Stone's groundbreaking 22-level Gradations of Evil Scale, a hierarchy of evil behavior first introduced in the book The Anatomy of Evil, Stone and Dr. Gary Brucato, a fellow violence and serious psychopathology expert, here provide even more detail, using dozens of cases to exemplify the categories along the continuum. The New Evil also presents compelling evidence that, since a cultural tipping-point in the 1960s, certain types of violent crime have emerged that in earlier decades never or very rarely occurred.

The authors examine the biological and psychiatric factors behind serial killing, serial rape, torture, mass and spree murders, and other severe forms of violence. They persuasively argue that, in at least some cases, a collapse of moral faculties contributes to the commission of such heinous crimes, such that "evil" should be considered not only a valid area of inquiry, but, in our current cultural climate, an imperative one. They consider the effects of new technologies and sociological, cultural, and historical factors since the 1960s that may have set the stage for "the new evil."

The New Evil Understanding the Emergence of Modern Violent Crime Audible Audio Edition Michael H Stone MD Gary Brucato PhD Charles Constant Tantor Audio Books Reviews

  • Engaging and fascinating from the very beginning! The New Evil grows in intensity with case studies that will give a chill down your spine. Even if you are a study in true crime, there are details about real life cases that you’ve never heard. Fully recommended to anyone interested in true crime, psychology, and the human condition. Well written and filled with details that make you feel like you are present as the crimes are being described. Not for the faint of heart. A true masterpiece!
  • I thought it was perfect to kick the book off with a horrific crime, lead us into learning the scales, and have at least one case to help illustrate each point of the scale to help readers understand the qualifications of each category.

From there I read dozens of cases and played along guessing the categories along the way and checking my work.

The book is a true crime delight; both terrifying and educational, my two favorite things!
  • I'm not quite sure what I was expecting, but I found myself disappointed. Imagine taking a 100-year-old shoe box worth of clippings of "true crime" newspaper stories, more or less sorting them in order of perceived heinousness, and printing synopses and you more or less have this book.
Such analytical/prescriptive passages as exist are facile and shallow. E.g. , bad people can kill a lot of people with semi-automatic weapons, let's ban them. Absolutely no reckoning with the Constitutional and practical complexities of the gun debate in America. No attempt to wrestle with the issue of how we handle the seriously mentally ill in the wake of the trend to de-institutionalization. It's analysis by bumper sticker.
Admittedly, some of the anecdotes are interesting in and of themselves, hence the second star. But the book fails to deliver on its subtitle.
  • As a lover of true crime, serial killer knowledge and a criminal justice student, I found this book to be very informative and thorough. I found it captivating and hard to put down. Every time I read a little more, I find myself more knowledgeable about these psychopaths in the book. Highly recommend!
  • Join Drs. Michael H. Stone and Gary D. Brucato as they take you down roads where the mindless uncritical boosters of Humanity have long feared to tread

Ever wonder why things are the way they are, why incredibly violent acts have occurred with a rapidity unheard of in your lifetime? A question such as this may be a complete boggle to the average consumer- if you feel you have to wait in line for the next iPhone, do me a favor and read this book while you are sitting around

To be sleep is to accept the world as it is without question or study; to be awake is to question all you see and understand and, among other things, accept the concept of personal responsibility

Needless to say, those whom have been “awakened” (and once you have been awakened you may never “sleep” again) will populate the audience for this ground-breaking book which explores the societal forces at work in the last 55 or so years- recent memory to many of us- which have now bottle-necked into the moral morass in which we suffer at the present time

Some friends of mine brag that they have never read a book in their life and as such walk through life unprotected- l would counsel them to secure this book- learn and be awakened

Finish this lucid, well-written and well reasoned exploration of the ills presently plaguing American society and know you may not fall asleep ever again; Drs. Brucato and Stone outline, individually and separately, their various theses, exploring the circumstances of these crimes and clearly impressing upon these their definitions and understandings through the use and elucidation of Dr. Stone’s “Gradations of Evil scale”- this book could easily be fashioned into an elective in any university’s curriculum

“Evil” is a term bandied about carelessly by the “PC” crowd- allow these two experts to unweave the obstructive strands which have long enshrouded this ancient abstraction as they cut into the core of the matters at hand; understand then how to define exactly what “Evil” is, and does; then project such understanding into your individual world-view and ask yourself “how have l changed since reading this book?”

    Ike

P S by the way there is a page in the book that will remind you what a neat lady
    Susan B. Anthony was
  • I enjoyed this book quite a bit. I’ve read quite a few true-crime books for leisure and during my time in college when I thought I wanted to be a Forensic Psychologist. The New Evil is a very well written, easily enjoyable, and informative book for both casual readers and individuals who might be more well versed in the field. Both authors delve into the degree of what is considered “evil” which is no simple task, as the reader will discover throughout each increasingly grisly chapter.
The book is divided into two equally compelling parts, and it is fun to see each author’s personality and professional experience come through as you read. Part 1 offers case studies and insights into various crimes and the individuals that committed them. If you’ve read many books on this subject, some of names will be familiar, but the insights given with these individuals are refreshingly new, such as those given on Ed Gein and Albert Fish. Personally, a name unfamiliar (to me at least), was Tommy Lynn Sells, a story that I will try hard to forget. Part 2 offers explanations to possible reasons for the “New Evil” we are seeing, which include as a reaction from certain angry men toward the increasing independence of women, and an “alphabet” of last names of criminals and the acts they committed.
While it is not light reading, the tone the writers use is appropriate for such subject matter, and the respect they have for the victims and the facts concerning the crimes come through clearly. All in all, “The New Evil” is a very well researched book written in unflinching detail and filled with clever insights. Readers will be sure to enjoy testing out their prowess with the scale, as the will be equally horrified by the stories the book contains.

Restless Wind Redemption Mountain Historical Western Romance Book 13 edition by Shirleen Davies Romance eBooks Reviews

  • This fast-paced, jam-packed historical western drama had me completely immersed in all that was happening from the first page to the end, with a great cast of characters, action, danger, surprises, family drama, heartwarming and at times heart wrenching romance. I loved the dynamic and undeniable chemistry between headstrong rancher and US Marshal Dominic Lucero and Josephine Dubois who ran to Splendor from New Orleans to get away from her controlling family.

Ms. Davies has given us another winner and RESTLESS WIND is a must-read for fans of this genre. I look forward to reading book 14 in the Redemption Mountain Historical Western Romance Series.

I received an advance reader copy of this book and this is my voluntary and honest review. I liked it so much, I purchased a copy.
  • I have really enjoyed all of the books in this series to date. The only reason for the 4 stars is the length. Book 1 was 434 pages, the book prior to this was 295 pages. This book was 195 pages. I admit that I don't really read short books. I prefer 300-400 pages or more, probably because I read so fast. If these books go below 195 pages i probably won't read them anymore.
  • One of my favorite things about Shirleen Davies' books is the way each couple complements each other. Dom and Josie are both strong, loyal, hardworking, stubborn, and full of spunk. The qualities they share are the same qualities that threaten to keep them apart. Absolute joy to read.
  • Shirleen Davies never disappoints. This story continues to build on the series with two strong characters that drew me to read their story in two days. I won't share any spoilers. I recommend this book for an historic sweet romance with adventure and surprises. Enjoy!
  • A great book just like all your books. I could not put it down until I read the whole book. Hope it will not be long before #14. Margaret(Peggy) Story
  • Characters from the past books are always brought into the new book so it is like following your own family lives
  • I have loved every book in this series. I think it would make an excellent tv show. I look forward to more.
  • . When is next book out? Hope it is soon. I recommend this book to all my friends. They won't be sorry.

Dex Mitchell was the heir to a billionaire manufacturing empire, but to step up to his rightful place in the business, he would have to embrace a relationship with the father who abandoned him…and that would never happen.

Brought up in an ultra-conservative home, Tirzah Olsson lived a sheltered life. Her parents had one goal marry her off to a respectable man from their church, but Tirzah longed for real love and the freedom to make her own decisions.

When her soon-to-be-fiancé left her in a perilous situation, Dex Mitchell rode up on a Harley like a fierce hero, saving her from a near-assault. Once she climbed on the back of his bike, everything shifted for both of them.

Neither of them knew how to resist the pull they felt, but they were from two different worlds. It would never work.

Blind Date with a Billionaire Biker Blind Date Disasters Book 3 edition by Evangeline Kelly Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

  • This book was a unique twist in the billionaire romance genre. Not only did it have an interesting plot but a great message about faith, stereotypes and overcoming personal issues.
Tirzah comes from an ultra-conservative upbringing where marriages are arranged and parents are to be obeyed. Her life is thrown into a tizzy (which becomes her nickname in our story) when through unexpected circumstances she is sent to live with a previously unknown grandfather who just happens to be the leader of a biker club. There her faith clashes with her grandfather Carl’s beliefs which shower people with grace, acceptance and love. Through him she meets Dex who shatters her stereotypes and helps introduce her to a God who is not a tyrant. What about all the rules? Can she really have more than the expectations she’s had since childhood?
Dex was rejected by his billionaire father and always saw himself as a failure. Through Carl’s club, now his family, he’s found what was missing. He no longer seeks escape through drugs or other means. He now has a mission—to reach out to the lost and hurting, yet the wound left by his dad has never healed. Can he forgive his father? As he wrestles with his dad’s effort to reconcile he meets Carl’s granddaughter, a woman he saved three years earlier from a riot and never forgot. His life just got a lot more interesting.
Can Dex and Tirzah move beyond their obvious differences and find the real love they both need? Will her parents and his past get in the way?
  • This was an excellent book that pulled me in from the beginning and didn't let go until the end. Tirzah comes from a very conservative home and church. She has to make decisions about what she believes in and how she will live her life. In the midst of figuring things out, she was told that her life is in danger and she will need to live with her biological grandfather. She finds a new life and freedom that she has never known. She must make a choice about how she wants to live. Tirzah must also figure out how to continue to honor her parents without bowing to their wishes. Dex is a reformed biker that lives his life for Christ. That alone is a contradiction, yet he is also the sole heir to a billion-dollar company. Dex must learn forgiveness and reconcile with his father. I love the characters and what they had to struggle with. I liked that they came from different backgrounds and were so attracted to each other. The chemistry between the couple was amazing. Once again the author did an amazing job of making the characters mature before they were ready to be a part of a relationship. This was an amazing book that I would love to read again and again. I recommend this book to anyone that loves opposite attract, inspirational romance.
I received a copy of this book. This is my honest and voluntary review.
  • Blind Date With a Billionaire Biker is a wonderful, inspirational romance. The story is unique - definitely not the usual billionaire fare. The characters are extremely well written. I loved Tizzy's grandfather and the rest of the bikers who rode to bring Christ to people. Tizzy and Dex are great together. Once I started the story ,I could not put the book down. I highly recommend this book.
  • Romance, clean; strong Christian faith elements
Definitely strong Christian faith elements. Tizzy's story was interesting. She and Dex had an interesting fall. The first few chapters felt kind of stilted, and slow, but after that the book was more readable. Perhaps because of the religious setting of her parents. The whole family dynamics were kind of flat with the forced relationships and parental posturing.
Once Tizzy went to her grandfather's, the story read much more naturally. If I had only read the first few chapters, it would have been a 2, but more of a 2.5 for me as a reader. This was more of a religious message book than a romance? They were a cute, sincere, couple so rounded up higher to a 3. If you don't like Christian faith books, it definitely isn't for you. I loved Tank and Dex and the other bikers. They were genuine, honest and real. Rounded up for those characters and that setting.
  • I loved that the main characters leaned on their faith and encouraged each other to pray about their concerns before making decisions.
I loved that Dex and Tank were honorable men that kept their promises.
  • Wow what a profound story. I could relate in so many ways. Being raised in a conservative home, I could relate to the no pants, no room for error in the church. I could even relate to the drug issues. It's sad that Tirzah's father had to hide his weakness from the church and couldn't even look to the church for prayer. Unfortunately it happens in so many churches because they are full of judgmental people. Thank the Lord there are also churches that have compassion and help people when they are faced with everyday life issues. Tirzah and Dex were a beautiful couple even when it looked like the odds were against them. I loved Tirzah's grandfather and I think all of us could learn something from him. The dialogue kept switching from the h to the H, but that did distract from the story. Would recommend for all ages.
  • This story started off with a bang, and never slowed down! The characters were so relatable. Their struggles and accomplishments had me crying and cheering. I found the lessons of acceptance of others so poignant. I loved the scripture references and the faith journey the many characters experienced.
The romance was tender, and clean, though slightly unbelievable at times. I appreciated that the physical intimacy was so Disney.
On a steaminess level I would rate this a pleasant G.
  • God never looks at the outside. He sees the heart and can transform anybody from the inside out. He also provides all we need to be happy and fulfilled.

The phenomenal true story of the black female mathematicians at NASA whose calculations helped fuel some of America's greatest achievements in space. Soon to be a major motion picture starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae, Kirsten Dunst, and Kevin Costner.

Before John Glenn orbited the Earth or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of dedicated female mathematicians known as "human computers" used pencils, slide rules, and adding machines to calculate the numbers that would launch rockets and astronauts into space.

Among these problem solvers were a group of exceptionally talented African American women, some of the brightest minds of their generation. Originally relegated to teaching math in the South's segregated public schools, they were called into service during the labor shortages of World War II, when America's aeronautics industry was in dire need of anyone who had the right stuff. Suddenly these overlooked math whizzes had shots at jobs worthy of their skills, and they answered Uncle Sam's call, moving to Hampton, Virginia, and the fascinating, high-energy world of the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory.

Even as Virginia's Jim Crow laws required them to be segregated from their white counterparts, the women of Langley's all-black West Computing group helped America achieve one of the things it desired most a decisive victory over the Soviet Union in the Cold War and complete domination of the heavens.

Starting in World War II and moving through to the Cold War, the civil rights movement, and the space race, Hidden Figures follows the interwoven accounts of Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden, four African American women who participated in some of NASA's greatest successes. It chronicles their careers over nearly three decades as they faced challenges, forged alliances, and used their intellects to change their own lives - and their country's future.

"Hidden Figures has garnered much attention for being the heretofore forgotten story of the African-American women who helped build NASA (or to be more exact, the NASA field center at Langley). The media has boiled the tale of these women down to the oft-used cliche "heroes"; Shetterley's narrative digs beyond that.

Sure, Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, et al are amazing, inspiring, and strong, but their own modesty over their roles in NACA/NASA history is telling: like many black pioneers of the Jim Crow era, they didn't step up for the attention or accolades. They stepped up to be "the first" in order to pave the way for those who would come behind them.

Shetterley deftly reveals these cross-generational ties at Langley, as well as how for African-Americans, the professional is often the personal when it came to representation and community. The portions of the book that were the most fascinating to me were those pertaining to the links forged by the black community in the Southern Virginia area, and how they intersected with employment and residency in Hampton as the 20th century progressed.

Shetterley's prose shined the best on the minutia of the women's lives, but the parts about NACA/NASA were just as interesting--and Shetterley's explanations of the mathematics and aeronautics is masterful. It was never pedantic, yet never overly simplified. As I reached the end, I was disappointed there weren't more pages, but also even hungrier for more stories about the intersection of race, gender, and science!

Get this book! It is an excellent companion to Nathalia Holt's Rise of the Rocket Girls and Lily Koppel's The Astronaut Wives Club, for a comparison of the different experiences of women in the Space Race."

  • My comments are somewhat bias since Katherine Johnson is my aunt. I have seen the movie twice and read the book. My preference is the book mostly because of the additional information provided about Aunt Katherine. Many movie goers who only see the movie will miss out on a number of opportunities to see more realistically Aunt Katherine's nature, attitudes, and life's perspectives on work, family, and race. The movie is done very well and I commend all those involved in its production including the talented stars. It is a case of getting one slice of pie when you could get two slices. I suggest you eat WELL! ATBroady
  • I saw the movie before I read the book, and I am honestly not sure whether that was a good or bad thing. I loved the movie, and I loved the book, but they are very different.

Generally, the book is a very fast-paced and interesting read about the black women who worked at the Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia, and their many and varied contributions to the field of aeronautical and astronautical research. It is part biography, part history of NASA, part history of segregation, part history of the civil rights movement, part history of the Virginia peninsula, and part history of women's rights. It is absolutely fascinating.

That being said, the book is very different from the movie, so don't go into it expecting them to be the same. The movie is deeply touching, but it is actually fairly inaccurate, and it has been pretty aggressively whitewashed (see re the Kevin Costner character). I think it is good to both see the movie and read the book, because one of the critical differences, and the difference that I think is missed entirely by the movie (to its great detriment) is the way in which issues of segregation were actually tackled at Langley. The movie makes it appear that enlightened white men of power were responsible for Langley's integration, when in fact the integration of Langley was almost entirely borne organically and of necessity. The book does a good job of explaining this, whereas that aspect of the movie is almost entirely fictionalized. I thought the movie took away some of the women's victories in this area (Katherine Johnson, for example, never went to the "colored" bathroom. She just used the regular, unlabeled bathroom, and no one ever told her not to), but the book gives the women more credit for their small yet trailblazing acts of defiance.

One other note the book actually covers quite a bit of complex scientific detail, but it is entirely readable to the layperson.

I highly, highly recommend this book.
